Random Radio Episode 2

Christoph Malcolm on June 28th, 2008

Christoph and Kimber talk about the zombie invasion of LunarWars.net, Lemsip and Marmite, Kimya Dawson, Bill Gates’ retirement, and read an email with a link to yet another ass-wiping study (we’re #1! we’re #1!). Also, upcoming site stuff - Reviews, iTunes, and Pixel Pilgrim.

[mp3] Length: 34:08

Random Salad is full of things much less interesting than this. Whether you've come to this page by a link or by voodoo sex magic, pay a visit to the homescreen before you go.

OMG you guys - I feel obliged to enlighten your ignorance. Bovril is not chicken stock. Bovril is a beef-extract based product that’s been around for over a century (although I believe a chicken version may have been developed relatively recently to increase the product range - but that’s not the real Bovril). Marmite is completely different (you should have listened to Gen - she looked it up). It’s a yeast based extract, and is considerably stronger in flavour than the Australian Vegemite product. It is nothing like Soy sauce, save a similarly dark colour.

You should listen to me and Ian, we are the voice of the Commonwealth.

Hey, I looked it up, too. By decree of the Internet, Marmite is thick soy sauce.

The British version of the product is a sticky, dark brown paste with a distinctive, powerful flavour, which is extremely salty and savoury with umami qualities, comparable to soy sauce.

By decree of my grocery store, Bovril is soup stock. I can assure you that in North America it’s sold in tubes, to be conveniently squirted into a rice maker or a pot of soup, rather than in jars as a “spread” for wacky European toast parties.

Joey, do you want to create a zombie union on the moon?

I know its a crazy idea, but it still beats scientology!

Bovril in a tube!!! What have you North Americans done?

Bovril (like Marmite) should be consumed from stupidly shaped jars that never allow you to fully scrape out the contents, but do allow you to partially fill with hot water and swish around the remains to make a tasty beverage on a cold (British) winters day. It’s not just the Europeans either, Bovril was a staple toast-topping spread for several months of my life whilst at a South African Airforce base - it was the one thing from home I recognised.

Now if you don’t mind, I have a wacky toast party to host - enjoy your delicious sounding “soup from a tube” won’t you?
